Surfing on the Osa Peninsula

Surfing Matapalo by Car

Costa Rica is known not only for its amazing wildlife, but also for its scenic beaches and great surf, and on this tour you can experience it all!  Just a 40-minute drive into the rainforest in one of our 4x4s, and you arrive at the lush green coastal surf area of Matapalo. It is here that you will find access to several different surf breaks, each one catering to different types of boards and experience levels.

At Pan Dulce you will find a calm and orderly spot ideal for those who love long boards and those wishing to learn to surf. Backwash is but one stop down and is great for those who actively ride short boards, and the breaks further down the line get larger and stronger for those who are experienced and in search of the strongest waves available on our peninsula.

When not in the water you will have the chance to rest in the shade surrounded by Scarlet Macaws and monkeys in this jungle paradise. It is right here, in this incredibly beautiful area that you can witness the merging of the vibrant rainforest and the warm tropical waters. Those of you passionate about surfing should not leave the Osa Peninsula without making this trip.

Surfing Pavones by Boat

There is more than one way to get to Pavones, and the old adage “getting there is half the fun” certainly holds true to this second mode of transportation for surfers looking to create memories at Pavones Beach…and that is by boat! Pavones is just 35 minutes across the Golfo Dulce, and it is here that you will find the second longest left-hand wave in the world!

This goofy-footer Mecca is world renowned for its amazingly long left hand rides. Our guides will make sure that you arrive just in time for the most productive periods of the day and to ensure the greatest experience possible. It is not just Goofy-footers who get excited about this trip as Punto Banco just a few minutes away regularly produces large powerful swells that provides both right and left breaks. This is the perfect spot for those of us who believe size matters, and are willing to test themselves accordingly.

During certain times of the year this area is best left to experienced surfers and strong swimmers, but our experienced surf guides will help to put you in the right breaks at the right times.
